Bharatpur is also called the Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan and was in the past, named as Lohagarh. The distinctive beauty of Bharatpur is the Keoladeo Ghana National Park or the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. This avifauna park is famous for thousands of migratory birds, which visit the park from several parts of the world. The park is home to more than 230 species of birds. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is a man-made wetland park, which was once used as a waterfowl hunting arena.

Apart from birds, just 27 mammals live in this sanctuary. The park holds 43 species of fishes. Fishes are an important factor here as they are the food for the bird population. There are ten species of turtles in Rajasthan and seven of them are present in this park.

The overall climate of the land is always warm and dry. The rainy season brings average rainfall and it is the worst time to visit the park. Monsoon season starts in July and ends in September. The winter is the most beautiful time to visit as the migratory birds would flock the place. Winter starts in November and ends in February. The summer season starts in March and ends in June.
